Chester Success Story - Update

"Updated Success Story for Chester the Puggle".

Chester, the puggle surrendered in Camden City,NJ, with scarring on his back from a severe flea infestation, was adopted into his new home today in Pennsylvania.

It is always sad to give up an animal you have taken into your home to foster and nurture until they are ready to go to their forever homes. This picture was taken the day we drove Chester Bester to his new home.

A loving couple with no children or other animals (but tones of dog experience) and a big beautiful home with a fenced yard loved Chester the second they saw him!!! On his first day they have already spoiled him with tons of new toys, a new bed, collar and bowls.. He will really miss his wrestling buddy, Penny, but one of his humans is home ALL DAY and he will have a new buddy to wrestle with.

Another success story for an animal that someone didn't want. So far this year, NJAFA has placed over 12 ADULT dogs into loving homes and 20 PUPPIES!

Thanks to ALL that inquired about Chester.. we had over 200 inquiries about him but know we picked the absolute perfect home for this little guy. He is already allowed on the couch, in the bed, wherever his heart will take him with this loving couple.

From Hell to Heaven
Fanny and Fiona were surrendered in Camden City, NJ. They were sick and thin and unaltered when we got them but oh so loving!!! They were a pure joy to have at our home.

They have been adopted to the most wonderful couple in Maryland into a beautiful home and with another little baby who lost his companion this year. Their new "mere" is a beautiful French woman and her very patient husband who have taken our very special little girls into their hearts.

We knew it would be a challenge for someone to take TWO of the sisters together but knew we could not separate them. We are so happy our patience paid off.

Special thanks to the girls' foster "Auntie Eileen" who showed them how much fun a bay window could be to sit and just dream the day away!

In Georgia, if a facility was using gas prior to August, 1990, then they are "grandfathered" in, and the "no gassing" law does not apply. That is the case in Clayton County where little Penelope was saved and where they continue to gas dogs. Please see the video below which shows how they are gassed.

PETA just learned that the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) and its commissioner, Tommy Irvin, have been found in contempt of court by Judge Tom Campbell of Fulton County Superior Court. This ruling comes after a more than seven-month legal battle that began when PETA received reports that dogs and cats were being cruelly and illegally gassed to death by various pounds and shelters in Georgia and that the Georgia Department of Agriculture was not upholding a 17-year-old law, the 1990 Humane Euthanasia Act

The lawsuit was filed by Law firm Schiff Hardin LLP in Atlanta on behalf of two plaintiffs: a former Clayton County Humane Society employee—whose dog was hit by a car and then killed in one of the gas chambers—and former state representative Chesley Morton, who introduced Georgia’s Humane Euthanasia Act in 1990. PETA sent a cease-and-desist letter to Cobb County on April 5 requesting assurance that the shelter would comply with the law, but the letter and subsequent communications were simply ignored on the basis of a "grandfather clause," which the county incorrectly claimed gave them an exemption from using humane methods of euthanasia.

It is simply incredible that private citizens had to go to court to get the department to abide by the very laws it is charged with enforcing, but the recent announcement that the GDA is finally being held accountable for their actions is a major victory, and hopefully it will help to shed some light on the brazen disregard for the law and for animal suffering that places like Cobb County have been getting away with for years in a crude attempt to deal with the cat-and-dog overpopulation crisis. Euthanasia is a tragic necessity while 6-8 million animals are abandoned in shelters in the U.S. alone every year and breeders continue to manufacture more for profit, but unwanted animals discarded by society must be offered a dignified, humane exit if death is the best we can offer them. There is no excuse for employing inhumane methods which simply prolong and intensify the suffering of these unwanted animals.

You can click here to see footage (taken in Yadkin County, North Carolina), which shows the horrific practice of using carbon monoxide gas chambers to kill animals. The GDA has simply ignored an act which prohibits this kind of "euthanasia" method in contempt of the law and in a complete violation of the public trust.

Many of you may have followed the case from February 7 when a mother dog Coco was chained to her doghouse and gave birth in freezing weather to l5 puppies. All but five died. The court case is coming up on Friday, December l4 at 9:30 am in Chiselhurst, NJ (near Waterford and Atco) at 201 Grant Ave in the Municipal Building.

A local high kill shelter called NJAFA to see if we could take this lovely little girl because she had to stay in quarantine for SIX MONTHS because she had a bite of an unknown source!! NJAFA offered to keep her because if she had stayed at the high kill shelter she was at she would have never survived.

NJAFA paid for surgery on her leg that was $l600 and when her quarantine was up and she was able to be with other dogs and people she readily accepted the challenge!!!

What a lovely girl Lola is and what Lola wants Lola gets. She has been adopted by our wonderful friends (Perry and Terri) at Animal Control Dog Training. Lola will soon be moving into her new permanent "digs" at the new house and she is soooooooooo happy.

Court Date for Coco and her frozen puppies

THE WHEELS OF JUSTICE TURN SLOWLY

For those of you that have been following the court dates (and the frustration of the court system!), we appreciate your patience while the dates have been postponed.

Because the prosecutor of a municipality is essentially the "employee" of the municipality, it would be unethical for that prosecutor to hear the case of a council person. The case had to be moved to a "conflict court" and then because one of the individuals involved in the new "conflict court" knew one of the players, the case had to be moved AGAIN.

With the case now BACK in Chiselhurst, it still CANNOT be heard by the same prosectur that is still the same employee of the Councilman. Ergo, a NEW judge and a NEW prosecutor have to be pulled from another municipality who knows NONE OF THE PLAYERS. WHEW!!! This has been done and a judge from Gloucester City and a prosecutor from TRENTON will be hearing this case in a "conflict court".

In February it will be one year that we purchased the fifteen puppies from the councilman for $250 who were born outside on the coldest day of the year.

Please continue to write letters to the Chiselhurst Court regarding your thoughts on Coco and the Councilman who "allegedly`" froze the pups to death because they were born outside to Coco who was CHAINED to her doghouse.

THE SECOND WE HAVE A COURT DATE WE WILL POST IT ON THE WEBSITE. IT WILL BE NOVEMBER 29 or 30th.

Many of you have written to ask what has happened to this case.

Beause the prosecutor in Chiselhurst cannot hear the case due to a conflict of interest, the case was moved to Berlin Boro. There, because of another "conflict of interest" the case had to be moved again. Now another judge and prosecutor from two other municipalities in New Jersey have been chosen to hear this case BACK in Chiselhurst.

The new date and time should be available soon. NJAFA is calling the Clerk of Court in Chiselhurst on a weekly basis to follow up on the court date and we will post it as soon as it becomes available so that all of you who attended the last hearing will want to be present at the new one.

The letters and emails that were written on behalf of Coco have to BY LAW be sent with the original file on this case and we have been assured the file is intact with letters from PETA, HSUS and other concerned entitities.

More letters and faxes are needed to assure that if Councilman McCann is found guilty of animal abuse and for being responsible for freezing Coco's ten puppies to death, he receives a sentence that would include 30 days community service and $l,000 per dog fine. We would also like to have the mother dog Coco returned to NJAFA since she was left to be chained up outside Councilman McCann's mother's house for nine years where Coco gave birth to several litters. We also returned the mother dog Coco with heartworm and Lyme Disease.

This poor little dog was given up by his human because he didn't want him because he was sick. My friends at Absolute Control Dog Training took him in and gave him a few weeks of great life He was found dead this weekend.

Remembering Cliff

Cliff dropped his body suddenly ...

November 11, 2007 - Kathy Maguire from New Jersey Aid for Animals emailed Dr. Liz today to let her know that Cliff, one of the dogs that won everyone's hearts at the recent Animal Communication workshop in Southampton, was found dead yesterday at the Farm. Perry found him dead on the floor when he came into the office in the morning. As you all may know, Cliff had Addison's Disease and had a very good life after being rescued by Perry and his wife, Terri.

Perry said that the other two dogs were lying right next to him. He did not die alone.

Terri and of course everyone is extremely upset because Terri said that in the weeks after Dr. Liz and all of you in the class left, Cliff did extremely well.

Cliff's body was cremated.

Kathy Maguire's group, New Jersey Aid for Animals, will put him up on their Memory Page. Kathy and others have given donations on his behalf. Dr. Liz was asked to sense Cliff to see what happened from his viewpoint. Upon connection, Cliff shared that his body very, very suddenly stopped making something his heart needed to keep beating, and his heart therefore stopped. Cliff is fine now and is on the next phase of his soul's journey.

Left, Dr. Liz teaches healing touches and demonstrates them on Cliff. Afterwards, Cliff, whose human thought he would need to be euthanized even the day before the Workshop, became very energized, to the point where after the workshop, people didn't recognize him because he was so happy and active. Terri Parks said she is very grateful for the weeks of quality of life that Cliff had, as a result of the Workshop experience. Perry and Terri offer their sincere gratitude to our entire group!

Cherry Dog Literally Saved by 5 Minutes from horrible gas chamber in Clayton Co. GA

MEET LITTLE CHERRY! (Name now changed to Penelope)

Ten week old boxer puppy literally saved from the gas chamber by minutes!

This is from a friend of the President of NJAFA who happened to be in GA last week. She was deperate to find a home for this little girl. The animal control where this poor little girl was taken is Clayton Co. Animal Control. The worst part is my friend had to PAY the animal control $75 for EACH one that was being gassed!

We are taking donations for her eye which will require a specialist.

Cherry is now with NJAFA and we will be looking for a home for her. She is very very sweet, loves other dogs and is a very calm little dog.

Do you know anyone who is looking for a really sweet, boxer x female -about l0 weeks old?

I was in GA for a week and just got back this morning. Yesterday, I went to one of the shelters there that still use gas. I can not believe how incredibly bad this shelter was!!!! The facility uses prisoners to care for the animals. The shelter was mostly filled with some really nice pits which were not available for adoption except by rescue. I saw a dump truck that picked up a huge pile of trash bags in which the dead dogs were put in. So sad. I saw the little boxer crammed in a little kennel filled with urine and feces. She had given up and was so hopeless and dejected. They were going to gas her that day. I just could not let that happen, so grabbed her and another little tiny -maybe 6 weeks old male puppy they were also going to gas. The girl is so incredibly sweet and now so happy and grateful to be out of that shelter. She does have cherry eye.

CHAINED DOG GIVES BIRTH OUTSIDE TO FIFTEEN PUPPIES on COLDEST DAY IN FEBRUARY, ALL BUT FIVE DIE...

Coco was CHAINED to her doghouse on the coldest day of 2007, February 7 in Councilman Robert McCann’s backyard and gave birth to FIFTEEN puppies while he and his mother, Rita Dickerson, stood by and watched. When we asked why they didn’t let her in, they said "She has never been in the house and has been chained for nine years and has always had her pups outside". NJAFA had to purchase the puppies to get them out of the cold and rent the mother for $250 so the puppies could live. The owner would not let us have the puppies unless we agreed to RETURN Coco after the babies were weaned. We agreed but not without her being spayed. We also then had to purchase another puppy for another $l00. All but 5 puppies died due to hypothermia.Sadly, we were forced to return Coco after she was done weaning the surviving puppies. Unfortunately, Coco also now has been diagnosed with Lyme and Heartworm disease. Coco was returned to Councilman McCann and his mother, Rita Dickerson.NJ SPCA filed cruelty charges to Chiselhurst City Councilman Robert McCann, 225 White Horse Pike, Chiselhurst, NJ, on May 1, 2007 for failure to provide proper shelter.

TEN FEMALE CATS TNR IN CAMDEN CITY

Last week NJ Aid for Animals Founder, Kathy McGuire, coordinated a huge project of spaying and neutering ten feral female cats from a resident's yard in Camden City,NJ.

These residents with a home of their own and a fenced yard called desperate to help these poor cats and were very happy to leave them in their yard to feed and provide shelter but had no resources, equipment or funding to get them altered.

Kathy McGuire travelled to Camden (albeit via several trips) with live traps, cat carriers and the proper containment protocol (large dog crates with small cat carriers inside) in which the ferals had to remain for a few days before being released. She showed the owners how to care for the cats in the containment protocol.

For TEN cats this required a very large amount of equipment but in the end...great news... all ten were successfully trapped and altered and re released back onto this resident's property where they will live out their lives being fed and supported by the owners.

What a burden this takes from animal control and from the local shelter when we can educate the local citizens and provide a safe haven for trap and release.

Frankie one eye kitten from Camden

This is Frankie. As you can see he has a severe trauma to his eye and it will need to be removed. Surgery will be over $300. Frankie was found in a resident's yard in Camden City. Frankie is the SWEETEST little kitten and is so happy other than having this terrible trauma to his eye.

NJAFA relocates colony of feral cats

Volunteers trapped eleven adult cats and two kittens from a feral colony behind a strip mall and translocated them.Volunteers worked all day Thursday and Friday to trap the feral cats that volunteers have been feeding.

To get their new "home" ready, volunteers worked all last weekend to transform a donated barn on private property to a warm and cozy place for the cats to live out the rest of their lives.

All the cats were altered and received all their shots along with ear cleaning and nail clipping. The kittens were put into a foster homes.

In the last two weeks, NJAFA has trapped and released, spayed/neutered and found homes for and/or translocated four kittens and nineteen cats.

Last year NJ Aid for Animals raised money to build almost FIFTY dog houses for the dogs in Camden City, NJ that are left outside. We put straw in all of the doghouses and this year we want to do it again.

We also need dry cat food desperately.

If you have a gently used doghouse or large dog crate that you would like to donate, pls call us for pickup. We ask that it be in pretty good condition.S

NJAFA will be at Whole Foods Market this weekend on Rt 73 at the Bark Bazaar if you or your group would like to drop any of these items at our booth.

Update on Cha Cha-pit bull rescued from AIDS patient in Camden City, NJ

WOW What a fabulous ending for this wonderful pit bull that we rescued from Camden City, NJ.

Last fall, Cha's owner was taken to a hospital in Northern NJ due to serious complications of AIDS and through extenuating circumstances, poor little Cha Cha was left all alone in his apartment. NJAFA recieved a frantic call from the owner's aunt asking someone to go and get the dog and take it to the shelter. We KNEW this poor dog would not stand a chance at the local shelter because she was older (over ten) and had serious medical issues (mammory tumors) so we took her in. We made arrangements to have the owner fax his surrender and permission to enter his premises from his hospital from N. Jersey to animal control in Camden. The dog was then surrendered officially to Kathy McGuire.

Our friends at Halo House kept her at their beautiful boarding facility for us and we raised funds to have Cha spayed and all her tumors removed. She spent almost three months recuperating from her surgery and from a severely infected paw. She was spoiled rotten and thank goodness her tumors were not malignant. Christmas and New Year's she got a special meal and she was not alone.

Then through arrangements with a private rescue Cha was transported to Manhattan by Kathy McGuire and one of Cha's benefactors where she was then taken the final leg of her journey by one of our friends at the Mayor's Alliance in New York.

Here Cha Cha is almost one year later....living the good life on a 34 acre farm in Vermont and travelling the world. She and her new family have just returned from a trip to Nova Scotia ... what a lucky little girl she is......don't you agree?

Cha's owner is still alive and we communicate with him quite frequently to let him know that his beloved dog is doing so well. The previous owner himself is a saint for taking Cha from people that were using her for fighting and giving her the best possible life he could give her with what little resources he had himself.

Fun Pet Fair in Margate City,NJ

Thanks to everyone who attended the Fun Pet Fair. We had over THREE HUNDRED DOGS compete for top prizes. It was the most well attended show in over a decade at Steve and Cookies.

The weather was PERFECT and the dogs were absolutely DARLING!!! The judges sure had a hard time deciding on who would be the winners!

The food was awesome, the Oyster Bar was packed with friendly visitors (and their well mannered dogs).

The entire event was taped and will be on tv! Watch this site for details and for some pictures and video!

Sad day for us at NJ Aid for Animals. Winkie is dead.

This is Winkie. He is a three week old kitten that was surrendered to us a few days ago in Camden, NJ. When we asked the owner where they got the kitten, we were told a man was "giving them away on the street". Three weeks old and already separated from his mother..not a good sign. No immunity built up and he had more fleas on him than any animal we have ever had in our rescue and the fleas were literally sucking the life out of him.

Winkie was wet when we picked him up but could not understand why. We took him to the vet and discovered he was born without a uretha. So he somehow managed to force two holes through his bladder where urine was coming from. But in the three weeks he was alive, the urine was going under his skin and everywhere else. His belly was bruised and purple. Plus he had a heart murmur. Our vet said she had never ever seen anything like this before.

When she opened the scrotum, urine poured out.

Winkie only was on this earth for 21 days. We had him for five. While we had him he was free of fleas and slept in this little bed with a heating pad. Although severely disfigured in his genitalia, he was very hungry and ate copious amounts of kitten food. When we came into the room where he was, he would follow our feet and "hitch a ride" on our feet.

We told the vet to do everything possible to save Winkie. While he was under anesthesia to create an opening for him to urinate, he passed.

Winkie has been buried under our St. Francis statue.

Success Stories: Dog with Hernia

NJ Aid for Animals goes to Camden City, NJ weekly to pickup dogs and cats from owners who have no transportation or funds to get their animals altered. This little dog when we picked her up to be spayed also had a hernia. Of course, we cannot return this dog with this kind of medical problem. Each spay/neuter costs $25.00 and we also pay for the shots which totals $42.00. We also try to Frontline the animals as they usually have fleas but because our funds are limited, we provide the most basic medical needs first. This hernia cost extra because of the surgery required.

Best news is that this little dog is happy and healthy with its owner.

He is soooooooooooo friendly and loving.

The family could not afford flea medicine for him so he has a terrible skin condition on his back where the fleas irritated his skin but he will be good as new in a short time. He is loving, non aggressive with food, other animals, people or cats. He is housebroken and can even sit!!!

These best friends were given up by a family in Camden who didn't want them because they had fleas...lucky for us and whomever adopts them because they are the most precious, happy and loving dogs you could ask for!

They must go together as Fiona sees her world through Fanny who is very independent. Fionoa is very needy and without Fanny will be on your lap the entire time!!

They must also have a very secure yard. Fanny likes to escape and has managed to get through her foster house very secure yard twice!

They play, play play all day long. They go into their crates at night and sleep through the night. We are working on house training.

DEMPSEY PORTRAIT – Tribute to a courageous and loving dog

This beautiful portrait done by Brendon Conners, a world-class animal portrait artist, is available for sale with l00% of the profit going to NJAFA.

This is Dempsey. A pit-bull that was used for dog fighting and had his ear ripped to shreds when we first got him.

He was brought to us because the local shelter could not keep him due to the expensive surgery he required and because they could not adopt out a dog (as in this case) was used for dog fighting.

We took Dempsey in and raised the funds to have his ear amputated. Once that was finished and he was on the mend, we took him back and forth to the vet for his follow up care and provided a safe and loving home for him.

Dempsey spent several weeks with us and then a few weeks with another foster while his transportation to a sanctuary was arranged through a third party.

Because two dogs from two other shelters could also not be adopted out, funds were raised and shared between Dempsey’s caretakers and supporters and the two other shelters to pay for the transport. The two other dogs accompanied Dempsey to the sanctuary where he continues to reside.

In honor of his courageous saga and journey back from hell, this beautiful color copy portrait l2” x l5” is available to commemorate his fabulous personality.

Snickers, a Cairn Terrier, was surrendered in Camden. He was filthy dirty, full of fleas, badly matted and fearful of men. Our friends at Animal Control Dog Training socialized and trained little Snickers and now he is in his forever home with Lucinda! What a happy ending for Snick A Doo Doo.

OUR NEWEST LITTLE BOY FOR ADOPTION

Don’t let this little guy’s funny teeth scare you off!!! He is a love bug. He rolls over on his tummy and loves to be petted. “Snickers” is a Shih Tzu mix. He had to be shaved down because he was so matted and full of fleas when he was surrendered in Camden City to our President, Kathy McGuire.

Poor little Snick-a-Doo-Doo……He also had a severe ear infection and flea bites all over his skin.

Snickers hair, although matted severely, was very long and once it grows back will have long beautiful hair … he is neutered, maybe 2 yrs old, all shots and sleeps next to the foster’s bed in his little crate all night without a problem. He also follows the foster around like a little SHADOW.

Snickers gets along fine with the other dog in the house (a Finnish Spitz) and doesn’t seem to mind the cats.

Snickers will do best with someone who is home or with someone he can ”travel” with so he isn’t left alone all the time unless there is another dog for him for company.

Once a week NJAFA goes to City of Camden and pick up dogs or cats that need to be altered. For those who don't have the transportation to take the animals to the spay/neuter mobile van that is in Camden, NJAFA drives them to the mobile clinic.

For those who don't have the money AND transportation, NJAFA pays for the altering and returns the animal back to owner that evening. We get our leads from people that already had the animals altered and have friends or family that need help, animal control, and from our "friends" in Camden that are on the lookout for animals that need altering.

"Lulu and Opal" are two little cats that no one wanted and were wondering the streets. We scooped them both up and had them altered, gave them their shots. Lulu, such a pretty orange cat, found a very nice home in S. Jersey. Opal had AIDS and some broken teeth. This poor little girl must have had a hard time eating, She would not have survived in Camden with a compromised immunity system too. A very kind woman has taken Opal (now named Marci) and will give her a wonderful life. Marci has had her teeth cleaned and fixed up. Thanks to these wonderful ladies who took these two great cats!

Camden Doghouse Project

Animal Control Officers in Camden saw the need for doghouses for those poor dogs that are left outside with no shelter. Although it is illegal not to have proper shelter, many still go without. NJAFA coordinated a project with three other groups that successfully raised over $4,000 to build sturdy doghouses. Our friends at Burger Fence recycles wood from the privacy fences they put up (yeah Ed!) so the dogs had the best wooden houses including rubber flaps to keep the wind out! Many dogs had a warm place to live this winter. NJAFA also obtained straw that a local farmer donated so each house delivered had straw to make themwarm and cozy!!

For the 2006/07 Dog House Project, Whole Foods Market chose NJAFA to donate the proceeds of their 5% day. From these proceeds, NJAFA is able to continue the project.
In 2005, we gave almost fifty dog houses to Camden residents with dogs. With your generous donations, we hope to EXCEED that amount this year!!! (Click here if you can help by making a DONATION)

Adoptable Pets Loveable Lola

Lola our loveable pitbull is going to be going to a wonderful individual who will be giving her PRIVATE TRAINING lessons while they foster her AND help us to find her forever home.

She is already PERFECT but will be more perfect after our friends tweak her manners a bit.

Lola can already sit, down and rolls over. Needs to work a bit on come and stay!!!! She LOVES potato chips and you can take a rawhide right out of her mouth and give her a pill with no problem. She loves to just lay on the couch and do nothing next to you.

Thanks to EVERYONE who contributed toward her surgery. She had three badly infected teeth removed and had her patella luxation repaired. She will be limping a bit for awhile but that hasn't daunted her wonderful friendly spirit.

Adoptable Pets The Magnificent Seven

Fourth of July came in with a bang this year; three Siberian Husky mixed girls and four boys were born to a beautiful Siberian Husky mom. However, because mom was malnourished, young and inexperienced, she experienced complications with the births and passed away.

The owner was also inexperienced, overwhelmed and confused as to what she should do with her puppies. Luckily, she remembered a former co-worker that helps rescue animals and is a foster-mom for NJAFA. As soon as the call was made, our volunteer ran to Camden to assist with the seven puppies that had gone 24 hours without their mother.

The puppies were immediately taken to our vet to be tested for Parvo and given a thorough health examination. All seven were given the green light to go home and the puppies are being nurtured with kid gloves by our fosters.

One foster has four pups. Liberty, (“Libby”) who is the team leader and loves to eat. Once they were introduced to ‘mush’, Libby laid across the entire plate, as if to tell the others to get their own plate. There is also “Betsy”(named after Betsy Ross) who is the smallest of this group; however, size does not matter as far as Betsy is concerned. When Libby decided to cover a plate of food, Betsy was doing the same at the second plate. Both girls are very affectionate and playful. This foster also has “Benny” and “Lenny”. Both boys are very attached to their surrogate mom and are the two bigger puppies of the group. Benny has longer hair and is usually referred to as “Gentle Ben”. Lenny, on the other hand, loves to call out for his mommy to let her know he loves her! All four have their mother’s crystal blue eyes!

In the second foster home, you have “Princess”, “Prince” and “Indy” (for independence). Princess is the smallest of the three, but she is the leader of the pack! She initiates all new ventures and is very playful. Indy has a longer coat of hair like his brother Benny. Indy is very laid back and affectionate, while Prince seems to be a bit more adventurous. Both foster moms bring all seven together at least once a week, so they can remain familiar with each other and go through the important transitional and socialization stages with their siblings.

All pups are being monitored by vets and expect to be fully vetted by August 30 and will be ready for their new homes on September 2nd. We are presently accepting applications for these darlings. Once applications have been received, they will go through a thorough process and all approved applicants will have the opportunity to meet with the litter and their foster moms.

Please be advised that it is a strict policy of the Board of NJ Aid for Animals that no dog will be adopted to an individual or family without a fenced yard.

Success Stories - Dempsey

"DEMPSEY"
Animal Control officers called NJAFA to ask if we would take this poor dog in that had been taken off the street and obviously been involved in a dog fight and used for dog fighting. The shelter where it would have to go would euthanize it because it had been used for fighting plus its wounds were so severe it would have been cost prohibitive to save this poor creature.

NJAFA aided poor Dempsey immediately. We raised funds to have surgery done on him immediately. Dempsey had his ear taken off because it was half off anyway. His body as you can see was scarred and battered. He was filthy dirty and thin.

Dempsey was a little lover boy and grew on the hearts of all of us. Although Dempsey was a sweet little boy and very very affectionate he could not be adopted to a family with another dog. Dempsey went to a very nice sanctuary for pitbulls and is living out his life there.

They love him and he will always have a special spot in our hearts.

This is Dempsey after he was all healed up and on the day he left for his forever home. We will never see him again but all those involved with his miraculous recovery sent love his way.

NJAFA Honored by Local Leaders

CAMDEN – Kathy McGuire, Founder and President of South Jersey-based New Jersey Aid for Animals (NJAFA), was recently honored by two separate Camden County organizations: The Camden County Freeholders and the Lourdes Health System.
At the Camden County Freeholders meeting in mid-July, McGuire was recognized for her outstanding community service. A formal proclamation issued by the Freeholders named McGuire as “an individual of exceptional dedication.” Nominated by Mayor of Winslow Township, Sue Ann Metzner and the City Council, McGuire was lauded for her efforts on behalf of Camden County animals.
In accepting the award, McGuire pointed out, “Over five million animals are euthanized each year in America. I plan to be part of the solution to lower this number and I look forward to all of you to be part of the solution as well. Building bigger shelters is not the answer. Spaying and neutering is.”
Just one day after being honored by the Camden County Freeholders, The Lourdes Health System publicly honored McGuire at a Riversharks baseball game held at the Riversharks Stadium. The organization’s highly coveted St. Francis of Assisi Award was bestowed by Lydia, the Lourdes’ Rehab Pet Therapy Dog, at a ceremony prior to the sporting event.
The award recognized Mrs. McGuire for her outstanding community service in Camden City with animals and bears the inscription: “Your work serves as a shining example of the mission and values of St. Francis.”
“We are dedicated to helping animals in all counties of New Jersey but focus our dedication and compassion for Camden City, New Jersey’s animals,” McGuire explains. “Because we are headquartered in Camden County, a Camden County animal receives a major portion of our funding for spaying and neutering and, when we have the funds, for needed medical procedures.”
McGuire personally responds to cruelty issues that are called in to her organization by contacting every entity and following up with authorities. She is well-known for her bold, tireless efforts on the streets of Camden, educating pet owners about the importance of spaying and neutering their animals – and many times, with owner permission, she takes animals to get animals spayed and neutered. McGuire champions the rights of pets to have shelter, clean water and food.
New Jersey Aid for Animals in privately funded by donations and has no paid staff. The organization has 501-c3 tax-exempt statuses and is registered with the State of NJ Attorney General’s Office.

Hot Weather and Your Animals

LEAVING YOUR PET IN YOUR CAR IS DEADLY…Remember a car can heat up inside to an OVEN in about three minutes. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS IN YOUR CAR. If you see a pet in a car, go inside of where that car is parked and ask the manager to make an announcement to have that person attend to their dog and if the dog looks in danger CALL THE POLICE. The police in many municipalities have the authority to remove the animal. Leaving an animal in a car in either frigid or hot temperatures is ANIMAL CRUELTY and an individual can be prosecuted.
Proper shelter which means a properly constructed dog house is the LAW. If you see a dog without proper shelter, call your local animal control or the NJ SPCA at l 800 582 5979. You can remain anonymous and they CANNOT reveal your name to the person about whom you are reporting.

CAMDEN COUNTY -- There’s a new animal rescue in town: a group that is unfettered by the kind of bureaucracy and politics that seem to bog down the other animal rescue behemoths. And the good news is, New Jersey Aid for Animals (NJAFA) is making a difference.
Kathy McGuire, Founder and President of South Jersey-based NJAFA believes that directly working the problem is the only solution to solving it. This diminutive, dedicated dynamo is so serious about rescuing helpless creatures from the horrific conditions imposed by their abusers, she’ll go right into places others fear to tread and is an intrepid traveler checking out tips from all over New Jersey about cruelty and then reporting it to the authorities when others “may not want to get involved”.
Topping the list of priorities on her daily to-do list, when she is not investigating the cruelty tips that come in, is educating people about spaying and neutering their pets –
“We are the ONLY non profit that travels regularly into Camden and personally takes animals from people's homes to get them altered and returns them the same night because these individuals don't have the money or transportation to get it done themselves. No one else does what we do. NJAFA is adamant about the importance of spaying/neutering because of the severe overpopulation of cats and dogs. McGuire explains “Checking out cruelty tips and then reporting it to the authorities, is as much of a priority for me as helping to prevent it – and a major way of doing that is educating people on the importance of spaying/neutering and getting it done myself if that’s what it takes She is well known in Camden and gets calls daily from individuals to have their animals spayed or neutered.
“We aid animals in all counties of New Jersey but focus our dedication and compassion for Camden City, New Jersey's animals,” McGuire explains. “Because we are headquartered in Camden County, a Camden County animal may receive a major portion of our funding for spaying and neutering and, when we have the funds, for needed medical procedures.” Armed with a tough, no-nonsense approach that offers zero tolerance for uncivilized behavior of humans toward the helpless, McGuire doesn’t just field calls from concerned citizens who report abuse cases – she acts on them. A seasoned animal rescuer for almost two decades, McGuire is a certified NJ State Cruelty Investigator and Animal Control Officer, she has done due diligence to make sure of her legal standing when putting in her time and efforts on behalf of abused animals and against the abusers.
In fact, when she was newly certified three years ago, the NJSPCA asked her to coordinate the rescue and placement of two major animal hoarding cases because of her unique approach to saving animals. McGuire pulled out more than 100 animals from two hoarders and saved 98 percent of them from being forced to shelters and being euthanized, which is the usual protocol.
In her tireless mission to stop the suffering – one animal at a time – McGuire is all too aware that animal abusers will many times escalate to abusing and even murdering other humans. This proven phenomenon provides even more motivation to eradicate the cruelty and support changes in legislation on the local and state level that give more latitude to investigators and cruelty officers and toughen the consequences for abusers.
Lauded for her “unique quality for investigation” by her instructor at the police academy where she acquired her training, McGuire possesses a rare kind of integrity that is part of her day-to-day routine: whether it is raising funds, attempting to reason with an abusive animal owner or fearlessly obtaining video of the abuse. Her tenacity, coupled with her talent for research and knowledge of the statutes, make her a formidable crusader for animals in distress.

MIRACLE IN CAMDEN

Many times in the past as a volunteer with one of the animal humane enforcement officers in Camden, I have reached out to help local citizens who either cannot afford to take care of their animals or do not have a car with which to transport their animals for vet care. Such was the case on a hot night in late June when I received a call from a Camden animal control officer that a resident needed help transporting her dog to a vet.

Arriving in Camden, the temperature was a scorching 96 degrees. No breezes cooled the hot cement that doubled as “backyards” nor were there any grass or trees to offer respite in Camden that night. I entered the tiny house with no air conditioning late in the evening and saw a thin German Shepherd lying with its head on its master’s lap. I immediately sent my husband to the CVS to purchase a thermometer to take the dog’s temperature. While it was hovering around l03, which is a little above normal, we all decided the best place for Tazzie, the shepherd, was to come home with me so I could transport him to my vet first thing in the morning.

Once at my home, Tazzie slept in a soft bed with a gentle breeze in a backyard full of trees in a safe, quiet environment, away from the chaos and cacophony of Camden.

The next morning at 7:00 am, when I went to check on Taz, he was dead. Dead in the literal sense that he was almost not breathing, he was in shock, he had no capillary response, his eyes were fixed and dilated, he was totally limp. Taz was lying in and covered with blood and diarrhea..

Still in my nightclothes, I scooped him up and put him in the back of my SUV. Minutes away from my local vet I reached the office just as they were opening.

We carried Taz into the hospital on a stretcher. When asked “how far do you want to go to save this dog”, I didn’t hesitate. I advised my vet to “do whatever has to be done to save this dog.”

Tazzie was plunged into a bath of cool water and an iv drip was started. Taz’s temperature was a staggering ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT DEGREES!!! Taz should have been and by all rights was dead.

Urgently, the doctor and the vet tech pumped Taz with antibiotics and fluids. Ice packs were placed around his body while I used a hose to keep cool water flowing on him and rinse away the blood and feces covering his limp body. I was told Taz would probably not make it and to be prepared to make the decision to put him down.

Miraculously, Taz survived that day and into the night. The next day Tazzie was trying to hold up his head. Each day that went by, his will to survive was stronger and stronger. He spent four days in intensive care and was released to me because it was a holiday weekend and I lived very close to the vet in case Taz would go back into a coma again.

Tazzie had survived the mean streets of Camden, a temperature of l08 degrees and four days in intensive care. Almost two weeks after Tazzie’s near death experience, he was surrendered to me so that I could provide him with a safe environment and a loving family.

As summer continued her sojourn and Taz regained his strength, he started to gain weight and began to play and discover his new surroundings. One day Taz decided to venture a paw, with trepidation, into our pool. One paw, two paws and off Tazzie went the rest of the summer swimming in our pool, with or without us, it didn’t matter. We had to buy him a life vest so that he would be safe while he swam all the time.

We knew the family Taz would be adopted to had to love the water and that is the family we found. Although I received literally dozens of requests to adopt Taz, only one stood out among them all. One family I knew almost immediately would be the family I would select to provide the love and a second chance at a happy life for Taz. The fact that they had emailed or called me every day for two weeks to see if they had been selected certainly made me feel that I had made the right decision.

Almost two months to the day on Labor Day weekend, I delivered Tazzie to his new home. He could not be more loved, adored or spoiled. Taz swims with his new brother and sister, Nicky and Samantha and they even brush their teeth together!!!

Taz’s story is a miracle and demonstrates what all of us can do when we are willing to go the “extra mile”, put ourselves out for an animal and never give up even in the most extraordinary circumstances. Tazzie, didn’t.

Many times in Camden, a resident will approach me to ask for help with their animal. The family at this house told me about their little Chihuahua that had a hernia and it was very very large. Of course, NJAFA took this poor little baby to the hospital immediately.

She had two inguinal hernias and an umbilical hernia. All three were the size of an orange hanging off her little body. The horn of her uterus and part of her intestine was in one of the hernias.

This little girl is thriving now and the family is now happy. NJAFA was there for another little animal in Camden that probably would not have survived had it not had surgery.

"MISS KITTY" - will bring a tear to your eye

Miss Kitty was also surrendered by her owner in Camden City, NJ because he had too many cats. She, too, would have had to go to local shelter. She is spayed/all shots/tested and is very friendly and loveable. She throws herself down and lies on her back so you can rub her full tummy!

Miss Kitty doesn't have tear ducts so she will require some daily tear drops of just plain/inexpensive artificial tears at CVS.

She will bring a tear to your eye when you see how sweet she is and how she likes to play. She goes CRAZY for the laser toy and her feather toy. She would give you hours of fun playing with her!

She can be seen at Petco in Cherry Hill.

Miss Kitty has been adopted by a very wonderful family who is giving her all the attention she deserves. They have no other animals or children and Miss Kitty will be spoiled rotten. She is already rolling over to have her belly rubbed and the new owners are loving her.....AND the owner takes the same medicine that Miss Kitty does so no problem with giving meds every day!!!

NJAFA got Miss Kitty from a mentally challenged individual in Camden City named Bart. He is a loving and gentle person who is a true animal lover and had taken Miss Kitty into his home to get her off the streets but could not keep her any longer.

I am grateful to you and Bart for taking care of her and you can tell she was taken care of she is soooo loving. I am a dog person and always have been until I met miss kitty (we did change her name to Cooper, she is named after cooper river it's a special place we like to walk and picnic) She responds to cooper now, When we saw miss kitty and said come see her I was reluctant b/c I can't bear to see any animal in a cage my heart truly breaks anyway I went over to her and she licked me!! I never met an affectionate cat until her and then I asked her special need From that day on we went to see her everyday and I missed her so much when we would leave and felt she belonged with us, we are so lucky and happy to have her. Though I have always been a dog person b/c I thought they were so much more affectionate, she is the most affectionate animal I ever had!! I love her so much and I think we are very lucky to have her she is so good (except for attacking the feet!) She brings us laughs and love everyday what else could I ask for! She plays with her laser light every night and now after she catches her bird toys she walks around with them in her mouth like look at me!! She is eating well her dry and wet food.

Precious – Adorable Black Chow

What can we say about this little girl? Her owner was selling puppies on the streets of Camden and she was the only one left, so we told the owner we would take the puppy but we would PAY FOR the mother to be spayed and get all her shots.

Precious’ mother was spayed last Thursday courtesy of NJAFA after having had four litters of puppies. She is an adorable little dog and the father is a full bred black chow whom we have not been able to locate. We were able to find the owner of Precious’ sibling and we will be having that puppy altered as well.

Precious is currently living with a foster who has small children, a baby, a large German Shepherd and two other small dogs. She is paper trained, crate trained and friendly with cats….she doesn’t mouth like most puppies .. 4.9 pounds and 9 weeks old…she loves to be held and will be about 40 pounds full grown

Every Dog Has its Day" This Day was Deuce's.
Deuce's owner, after calling several other rescues in the area for help and not even getting a return phone call, finally reached Kathy McGuire, our President. Deuce's owner explained he had already spent $450!!! on this poor dog and was told the dog would probably die if it were not taken to an all night emergency care facility. The owner had no more money left for his dog. He begged us to help him. How could we turn down Deuce's little face?

Deuce was taken immediately to our wonderful vet who admitted Duece into intensive care. Deuce had Parvo a very contagious (and deadly) disease that is very common in Camden City. What the other vet had failed to ascertain as well is that Deuce also had intestinal torsion. Again, a fatal situation.

Little Deuce was probably not going to make it. The dog was already in a compromised situation with his immune system and still had to go under anesthesia to be operated on for the torsion.

It was touch and go for the four days Deuce spent in intensive care.

Every day our vet said it probably was a lost cause but we told him to do whatever it took to save this little guy.

Today, three weeks later, Deuce is home with his owner in Camden being a good boy.....except he really got spoiled on that boiled chicken and rice!!

The owner although not able to pay us back for this very expensive stay in hospital is helping NJAFA pass out flyers in Camden to let people know about spaying and neutering their animals.

This devoted dog was taken to a shelter after her owner was hospitalized in the terminal stages of AIDS. Without the intervention of Kathy McGuire, a DCO who is devoted to pit bulls, she would most certainly have been euthanized because of her age. Because it is the older dogs who especially touch our hearts, we at Out of the Pits are hoping that someone will offer Cha Cha a chance to live out her years in peace and happiness. More information will be posted here as we get to know this lovely dog. So far she's great with other dogs and ADORES people

Camden, New Jersey

December, 2006 NJAFA received a call from NJ Animal Rights that a dog had been left by its owner in an apartment in Camden, NJ. NJARA had pleaded with a couple of other rescue groups that do work in Camden, but they would not help. Because NJARA is headquartered in North Jersey, NJAFA was asked to intervene because of their work in Camden.

Kathy McGuire, President of NJAFA, obtained the proper surrender information from the owner and forwarded it to animal control to have the dog removed from the property.

Cha Cha, had been left for several days without her owner. She was in good shape but scared and lonely. Her owner would not be coming back ever.Cha Cha went into heat the second day she was taken in. She also had a severely infected paw from trauma to it that had not been treated.. The paw was oozing and very swollen

The kind owners of Halo House in Franklinville NJ gave Cha Cha a home at their kennel while we searched for a rescue and/or a home for her to go to.

Cha Cha was spayed, had several tumors taken off her neck and chest and four mammary tumors taken off (all begnin). One nipple had a large tumor on the end and because of the weight was very severe and hanging down almost to the ground

All during the time Cha was at the kennel NJAFA went to visit her and play with her. On Christmas Eve, we took her presents and played with her, on New year’s Eve day, we also visited her and made sure she knew someone cared about her. NJAFA also took Cha to all her vet appointments, check ups and to our home for “day trips” and transported her to NY for final leg to a pit bull rescue in Northern NY

We were lucky the rescue group took Cha as she would never have had a chance at the local County shelter where they are very high kill and are already over burdened with pitbulls. Additionally, she had so many medical issues money would not have been available.

Kathy McGuire spoke to the owner who is terminally ill with AIDS. Cha was treated very badly before her new owner of the last ten years rescued her. She used to go to work with him and they were together 24/7. He was a wonderful person to take in Cha Cha and give her a good home. He said he misses her very much.

Cha spent her last night in NJ at the McGuires sleeping with Kathy McGuire. Cha Cha was let out for the evening to potty which she did immediately, and came back in and went to sleep promptly through the night with no disturbances and no crying. Cha Cha slept next to Kathy the entire night with no fussing, crying or problem. She felt a human body sleeping next to her for first time in weeks.

Poor Teddy. Chained to a tree by a man who went on vacation and forgot about him. A neighbor called NJAFA to tell us no one was feeding the dog and it had a horrible smell coming from him. We rushed to the house where we saw Teddy who looked like a small bear matted and covered with fleas and an embedded collar. The "smell" was from an infection on his neck.
Teddy turned out to be a very handsome boy indeed. He stayed with NJAFA for about two months until we could place him for adoption with a no kill rescue in PA.

NORTON aka "Snort"

While driving through Camden it is very common to see little puppies foraging for food and water. They really belong to no one and have somehow managed to eek out a life on these unforgiving streets. NJAFA while on a trip to Camden to pick up animals for altering, saw this little guy loping along the street searching in garbage cans.

We scooped him up and took him to wait at the shelter for seven days. No one of course claimed him but because he was so gangly and goofy we named him "Norton" like the character in the old "Honeymooners" series.

"Snortie" got adopted to a very loving family in Jersey City. This is a picture of one of their children. Who says pitties are dangerous? Couldn't prove it by this picture!

TAKE THIS LITTLE LEPRECHAUN HOME LITTLE MICKEY FOUND IN CAMDEN ON ST. PATTY’S DAY

NJAFA received a call from a very kind woman in Camden that was feeding this little guy. He was very very sick and she could not care for this little kitten. We picked up two others at the same time and nursed them back to health. Mickey was matted, had a bad upper respiratory virus and his eyes were so infected they were glued shut.

Look at little “Mick” now. He is all better and well adjusted with his foster family. In fact, his “sister” this big German Shepherd bathes Mickey regularly and Mickey loves it. Mickey also lives with four other dogs!! And three children!!! He loves all the attention and activity.

Mickey has long silky black hair that he loves to have brushed. He is neutered and has all his shots and been tested.

Many times while in Camden on one mission or project, we become distracted or get involved in something else. Such was the case one cold day in winter while down there picking up a cat, a woman called us over to ask if we wanted a puppy. The pup had a broken leg and later we found out she also had ringworm. Scarlette is alive and well and already with a loving home up north.
